Whether you’re an engineer with an interest in quantum computing, a physicist with a passion for practical technologies, or a mathematician with an aptitude for experimental work, this PhD is the next step to a successful career in quantum technologies in areas such as:
- practical quantum computers
- quantum algorithms and quantum error correction
- quantum networks
- quantum sensors
- the modelling power of quantum simulators.

This four-year degree has been designed by leading academics and industry partners. It includes a broad range of taught modules at the 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ and the 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ of Bristol in Year 1, followed by the research project phase in Years 2-4. You’ll have access to a broad technology base and state-of-the-art facilities at Sussex and Bristol.
As a postgraduate researcher, you’ll learn from world-leading academics, industrial collaborators and your peers. You’ll:
- gain experience of practical application as well as a sound theoretical understanding of quantum physics
- develop complementary skills – such as commercialisation and science communication – necessary for academic and industrial excellence
- have the option of going on industry trips to visit companies and research laboratories working in the quantum field
- have financial support for academic and industrial secondments, as well as international and national conferences.

Note that qualifications obtained by distance learning or awarded by studying outside these countries cannot be accepted for English language purposes.
You will normally be expected to have completed the qualification within two years before starting your course at Sussex. Modules
Teaching of your taught modules in Year 1 will be delivered by the 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ and the 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ of Bristol.
Core modules
Core modules are taken by all students on the course. They give you a solid grounding in your chosen subject and prepare you to explore the topics that interest you most.
- Applications of Quantum Information (delivered by the 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ of Bristol)
You’ll also carry out either two one-semester research projects or one two-semester project. These projects will give you research experience and the chance to explore different research topics for your PhD project.
Options
Alongside your core modules, you can choose options to broaden your horizons and tailor your course to your interests. This list gives you a flavour of our options, which are kept under review and may change, for example in response to student feedback or the latest research.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
We’ll do our best to provide as much optional choice as we can, but timetabling constraints mean it may not be possible to take some module combinations. The structure of a small number of courses means that the order of modules or the streams you choose may determine whether modules are core or optional. This means that your core modules or options may differ from what’s shown here.
How to apply
If you’d like to join us as a research student, there are two main routes:
- browse funded projects in this subject area. You can apply to funded scholarships that also cover the costs of all the training elements
- browse our potential supervisors and propose your own research project. If you are self-funded, you’ll need to pass the same selection process as applicants for the funded scholarships. Some of the elements of enhanced training will be subject to you being able to fund them from your own sources.

How much does it cost?
Fees for self-funding students
Home students: Fees are not yet set for entry in the academic year 2025/26. Fees will become available once set by United Kingdom Research and Innovation.
Channel Islands and Isle of Man students: Fees are not yet set for entry in the academic year 2025/26. Fees will become available once set by United Kingdom Research and Innovation.
International students: £26,250 per year for full-time students
Home PhD student fees are set at the level recommended by United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) annually, rising in line with inflation. Overseas fees are subject to an annual increase - see details on our tuition fees page
Additional costs

Empirical research costs
On top of your PhD fees and living costs, you may also need to cover some research and training costs, relevant to your research project. These costs will depend on your research topic and training needs, but may include:
- travel (to archives, collections or scientific facilities)
- a laptop
- overseas fieldwork costs (travel and accommodation, and language training)
- conference costs (travel, registration fees and accommodation)
- laboratory consumables and workshop materials
- participant costs
- transcription or translation costs
- open-access publication costs.
If you have a scholarship from one of the UK Research Councils, your scholarship should cover these types of costs. You'll receive details of how to claim this additional funding.
