MMath Project (846G1)
30 credits, Level 7 (Masters)
Autumn and spring teaching
The module spans both semesters of Year 4 and accounts for 25% of the Year’s credits (equivalent to two modules). The project consists of a sustained investigation of a mathematical topic at master's level, a report of approximately 15,000 words written in LaTeX, and a short presentation. You are free to choose the topic of your project from a variety of available options which is meant to consolidate, and expand upon, the material you have studied up to Year 3 and are covering in Year 4.
Apart from expertise in their chosen topic, as part of the project, you will also acquire transferable skills including:
- the use of mathematical typesetting
- (mathematics-specific) information technology and databases
- general research skills such as presentation of mathematical material to an audience
- collecting information
- usage of (electronic) scientific libraries.
Assessment
15%: Practical (Presentation)
85%: Written assessment (Dissertation)
Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 15 hours of contact time and about 285 hours of independent study. The 5X社区视频 may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We鈥檙e planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
We鈥檒l make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
