Histories of Women in Music (W3111)

In this module we explore the role of women as music makers across genres and epochs, and hence “histories” (plural) of women in music.

The module is not structured as a chronological survey but topics are grouped according to issues of genre and identity, e.g. women in noise music or lesbian approaches to musicology.

The module draws from the fields of musicology, music theory, journalism, feminist studies, and cultural studies.

To take this course you don't need to be able to read music but a familiarity with the basics is recommended. The module and its assessments are self-selecting in terms of prerequisite knowledge.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 20 hours of contact time and about 280 hours of independent study. The 5X社区视频 may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
