We are often told that we live in a globalised world where scale and distance no longer matter, with anywhere seemingly within reach. In contrast, this field-course module instead focuses on the geographies surrounding the university.

This 'local' serves both as a window into broader, global processes and as an area of study. Through a combination of online seminars and non-residential field teaching, you'll explore the diverse landscapes of Sussex, including rural, urban, human, and physical environments.

The module examines three overlapping intellectual themes:

• continuity and change in urban forms
• rural heritage and environmental politics
• coasts, cliffs, and conservation.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 34 hours of contact time and about 116 hours of independent study. The 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
