Autumn and spring teaching

In this module, you'll focus on a topic of your choice, which is relevant to social work practice or theory.

You'll learn in small discussion groups and benefit from individual supervision for your dissertation.

You'll be encouraged to make links between research and professional practice, and to develop your research knowledge and skills by planning, conducting and writing up a piece of literature-based research.

On this module, you'll learn about:

  • framing research questions and planning a literature-based research project examining a topic of your choice
  • reviewing of relevant literature and research evidence
  • applying and reviewing of research methodologies, methods and ethics
  • systematic analysis and synthesis of findings into a critical report
  • drawing conclusions from research findings, identifying their relevance to contemporary practice or theory
  • making links between research and professional practice and utilising research mindedness in relation to practice
  • knowledge of and ability to apply research mindedness, understanding and skills of critical appraisal, as both consumers and practitioners of social work research
  • developing, planning, conducting and writing-up an informed, ethically sound and well argued piece of literature-based research.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 450 hours of work. This breaks down into about 16 hours of contact time and about 434 hours of independent study. The 5X社区视频 may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We鈥檙e planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
