Foundations of Neuroscience 1 (C1054)
15 credits, Level 7 (Masters)
Autumn teaching
This module offers an introduction to cellular, molecular and systems neuroscience including cellular physiology, synaptic transmission and developmental neurobiology. The module is based on a substantial undergraduate lecture series (Principles of Neuroscience) together with dedicated tutorials for Masters students. Foundations of Neuroscience 1 is intended primarily if you have not studied cellular neuroscience topics at BSc level.
Topics covered include:
- Signalling and transmission by nerves and synapses
- Neurotransmission and neuromodulation
- Plasticity in the nervous system
- Cellular and molecular basis of learning and memory
- Fundamental disease mechanisms
- Development of the nervous system
- The role of early experience in the development of the visual system
- Methodological approaches to studying fundamental brain processes
Teaching
65%: Lecture

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 38 hours of contact time and about 112 hours of independent study. The 5X社区视频 may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We鈥檙e planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
We鈥檒l make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
