Doing Gender in Theory and Practice (350D7)

30 credits, Level 7 (Masters)

Spring teaching

This module will familiarise you with the literature on gendered institutions, gender regimes and how gender power dynamics operate within informal spaces and in formal organisations and systems. You'll develop practical tools and strategies to analyse gender equality issues in organisations.

You'll become familiar with using the Gender at Work Framework and explore how the Framework has been applied to develop program interventions in a variety of institutional settings around the world.

The main skills that we'll develop, include:

  • understanding factors that limit or enhance the capacity of individuals and organisations to act as ‘change agents’
  • organisational and programme analysis, using the Gender at Work Analytical Framework; this includes identifying and understanding ‘deep structures’, ‘social norms’ and ‘gender regimes’
  • power analysis and gender-aware planning, including entry points for change
  • strategic evaluation and learning for gender equality.
