Biography

Professor Sue Thornham is Professor of Media and Film in the School Media, Film and Music at the 5X社区视频, UK. Her research focuses on feminist theory and its applications to film, media and cultural studies. She teaches ‘Viewing Women’ on the Department's undergraduate degree programmes, and ‘Feminism and Film’ on its MA programmes. She is the author of What If I Had Been the Hero? (British Film Institute 2012), Passionate Detachments: An Introduction to Feminist Film Theory (Edward Arnold, 1996), Feminist Theory and Cultural Studies (Edward Arnold 2001) and Women, Feminism and Media (Edinburgh 5X社区视频 Press, 2007); the co-author, with Tony Purvis, of Television Drama: Theories and Identities (Palgrave 2005); the editor of Feminist Film Theory: A Reader (Edinburgh 5X社区视频 Press 1999), and the co-editor, with Caroline Bassett and Paul Marris, of Media Studies: A Reader (Edinburgh 5X社区视频 Press, 3rd edition 2009). She was Chair of the national subject association, the Media, Cultural and Communication Studies Association (MeCCSA) from 2007 - 2013. She was a member of Sub-Panel UOA 66: Communication, Cultural and Media Studies for the 2008 RAE, and of Sub-Panel UOA 36: Communication, Cultural and Media Studies, Library and Information Management for the Research Excellence Framework (REF). She chaired the Quality Assurance Agency Benchmarking Group for Communication, media, film and cultural studies, and the 2008 Benchmarking Revision group.
