Feminism Confronts AI: Professor Judy Wajcman SHL Digital Keynote 2024

The Sussex Digital Humanities Lab is delighted to announce Professor Judy Wajcman as this years’ annual keynote taking place on Friday 28 June on campus.

Her talk Feminism Confronts AI: The Gender Relations of Digitalisation will examine the gender relations of digitalisation, with a particular focus on AI as the most contemporary feature of this. There is increasing recognition that technologies are both a reflection and crystallisation of society, but Professor Wajcman will argue that there is still insufficient focus on the ways in which gendered power relations are embedded in technoscience. This is as much the case with AI as it was with previous waves of technological change.
Professor Judy Wajcman is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics. Until 2022, she held the Anthony Giddens Chair in Sociology. She is a Fellow at The Alan Turing Institute, where she leads the research project. She has been a Visiting Professor at the and is a member of the . She was President of the Society for Social Studies of Science (2009-2011). In 2013, she was the recipient of the William F. Ogburn Career Achievement Award of the American Sociological Association.
Professor Wajcman has an honorary doctorate from the 5X社区视频 of Geneva, and is a Fellow of the . In 2018, she received the Oxford Internet Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award ‘in recognition of her contributions to the field of the social study of science and technology'.
