Research Image Competition 2024
Giving a glimpse into the world of brilliant, diverse postgraduate research across Sussex
This year's competition is now closed. You can view the shortlisted images which were on display at SussexDocFest in the Student Centre on Thursday 6 June in the online gallery below.
This year's prizes were judged by Susanna Broom, Head of the Sussex Researcher School, and 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ photographer Stuart Robinson. Winners - including People's Choice - were announced at the prize-giving ceremony on Thursday 6 June.
Winners
- First place: Elizabeth Cross (Brighton & Sussex Medical School)
- Second place: Shaadil Shah Mandarry (Mathematical and Physical Sciences)
- People's Choice: Katie Allan (Life Sciences)

First Place: £200 towards your research
Second Place: £100 towards your research
People’s Choice: £100 towards your research
Judges will assess the images according to the following criteria:
Image
- Is the image eye-catching and engaging?
- Does the image effectively communicate the nature of the research?
- Is the image of sufficient technical quality?
Title and caption
- Is the title engaging?
- Is the caption written in a style that is accessible to a non-specialist audience?
- Do the image, title and caption work together to form a coherent and clear narrative?
