Module Outline
- Electrostatics: Coulomb's law, electric fields, Gauss's law, electrostatic potential, conductors and insulators.
- Electric circuits: DC and AC circuits, Kirchoff's laws, boolean algebra and digital circuits.
- Magnetostatics: Magnetic forces and magnetic fields, motion of charged particles in magnetic and electric fields, Ampere's law.
- Electromagnetic inductance: Lenz's law (with applications), self-and mutual inductance.
Module learning outcomes
At the end of the course a successful student should have: some ability to apply the laws of electricity & magnetism to specified situations.
Some ability to investigate electric and magnetic phenomena through laboratory exercises.
Be able to manipulate the essential equations describing electrical circuits and carry out elementary calculations.
