Control Engineering (H6105Z)
Control Engineering
Module H6105Z
Module details for 2021/22.
15 credits
FHEQ Level 6
Module Outline
Using Matlab/Simulink as tools, this module teaches students some theoretical concepts, design methods and practical topics in control engineering. This module aims at bridging the gap between 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ education and the ability and skills required in a real working environment. After reviewing feedback control techniques and concepts, a number of lectures are given on five most commonly used design methods and on good engineering practice. Each student is assigned a unique design case study to complete. This is to mimic a consulting work in a company. Under the instructions and guidance from the tutor, each student will complete a few different designs for comparison and present some analysis and make a recommendation in a final report.
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate understanding of the key aspects of systems analysis and control using state space and discrete control approaches.
Deploy appropriate methods to solve control engineering problems.
Apply a linearization method to a nonlinear system and extend the use of state-space analysis and control tools.
Evaluate control strategies’ performances on real systems using Matlab/Simulink.

Please note that the 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ will use all reasonable endeavours to deliver courses and modules in accordance with the descriptions set out here. However, the 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ keeps its courses and modules under review with the aim of enhancing quality. Some changes may therefore be made to the form or content of courses or modules shown as part of the normal process of curriculum management.
The 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ reserves the right to make changes to the contents or methods of delivery of, or to discontinue, merge or combine modules, if such action is reasonably considered necessary by the 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ. If there are not sufficient student numbers to make a module viable, the 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ reserves the right to cancel such a module. If the 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ withdraws or discontinues a module, it will use its reasonable endeavours to provide a suitable alternative module.
