Module Outline

The Internet-of-Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects or "things" embedded with electronics, software, sensors and connectivity to enable it to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices. In this module, we will introduce IoT concepts and various building blocks, applications and ecosystems associated with the IoT. Students also get hands-on experience in building an IoT system by integrating sensor devices and cloud to remotely monitor and control sensor data from any Internet devices, such as PC or smart phone. The module aims to give full support to students with a series of carefully constructed concepts and exercises which will start from basic principles to more advanced IoT system design.

4. Cloud platform and management for IoT
5. Emerging software-defined networks and virtualization for IoT
6. IoT vertical applications (vehicle, industry, ehealth)

Module learning outcomes

Systematic understanding of IoT, including concepts, elements, applications and ecosystems.

In-depth analysis of the architecture and standards as well as connectivity protocols in IoT

Design and critically evaluate the performance of software modules to control: connectivity between IoT nodes, including access protocols for gateway, cloud and end-user client access.

Critically evaluate IoT applications with a focus on end-user applications and systematically identify effective designs.
