Design for Manufacture for PDes (H7134)
Design for Manufacture for Product Design
Module H7134
Module details for 2024/25.
15 credits
FHEQ Level 5
Module Outline
This module introduces the student to the principles, methodologies and techniques of the best practice known in the Engineering and Product Design disciplines as 'Design for Manufacture.'
Through this module, students will gain exposure to concepts of industrial engineering, operations management, materials and processes, product design, quality control, and sustainability. In addition, students will gain an understanding of how these factors have an impact on the manufacturing feasibility of a product. Topics covered include: tolerancing, process capability, production types, product design specification, rapid manufacturing, industrial standards, sustainable design, technical drawing, cost estimation, and project planning.
Learning Outcomes will be achieved through a mix of lectures, and project-based learning. Working in teams, students will work on a project in which they will tackle the redesign of a product all the way from brief interpretation, to manufacturing specification. This hands-on design project will give students the opportunity to further develop their technical drawing skills and CAD drawing for manufacturing as well number of transferable skills such as: critical thinking, communication, leadership and team management.
Module learning outcomes
Recognize product design cost drivers related to manufacturing while appreciating the cost implications of different production volumes.
Generate a Product Design Specification (PDS), design reports, and present ideas in a rational and coherent manner.
Work effectively as part of a group.
