The 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ, in collaboration with Sussex Uni Food, has launched a new project supporting the  – ‘Relish’ the Bagel Food Van Micro Business Project.

Relish is run by the DSDT along with young people and adults aged 16-25. The project aims to provide learning opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities while offering a unique culinary experience and educating the campus community on inclusivity and kindness.

The Down Syndrome Development Trust

The DSDT, based at the Sussex Innovation Centre, has been supporting individuals with Down Syndrome and their families for over a decade. Through providing services, specialised interventions, short breaks, and a plethora of opportunities, the Trust has been helping young people flourish. 

Nationwide, it offers consultancy to families, schools and support groups. The charity plays an important role in improving outcomes in education, sports, social skills, and the overall life of its members.

A new chapter in campus partnerships 

The initiative marks another milestone in the 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ and the Trust’s collaboration, joining projects like the , which succeeded with the help of Sussex student volunteers. 

The Relish venture aims to empower participants and foster inclusivity, while educating customers on how to engage with individuals with learning disabilities and the benefits to all when we do this.

"Projects like this are beneficial to everyone involved. We invite the 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ to help our members make meaningful contributions to society whilst the young people in return can teach them the growing benefits of a slower pace of life and the value of being patient and present in the moment…", says Senay Smallwood, DSDT Managing Director.

Empowering opportunities

Experienced staff manage food safety, inventory, and customer service, while young participants build skills and make connections. 

As their confidence grows, they’ll take on more responsibilities such as stock ordering and finances, learning entrepreneurship and gaining independence.

Senay Smallwood said: "We're excited to have installed our bagel van on campus, offering our members the chance to learn, build new skills, and join the community. Our mission is to create meaningful experiences while promoting inclusion and an understanding of the needs and talents of individuals with learning difficulties.

"This project will break down barriers by offering tailored tasks that boost confidence and provide transferable skills. This unique opportunity will allow young people with learning disabilities to be part of university life, expanding their horizons and feeling valued. With your support, this project will help us thrive."

Simplicity in focus

Relish has simplicity at its heart. The Trust invites everyone to support this special cause with an open mind.

Head over to Relish, based at the Bramber House lawns, open between 10am-2.30pm, Thursday to Friday this term. Enjoy large, fluffy bagels, with a variety of toppings including whipped cream cheese, the team’s special BLT, mozzarella, tomato & pesto, marmite, banana & peanut butter, and more! Drinks and snacks also available.

A better university for a better world 

This initiative aims to address inequalities that lead to the institutionalisation of people with learning disabilities as they age, and reflects the 5XÉçÇøÊÓƵ’s commitment to kindness and inclusion, setting an example for other institutions to follow.

Sussex Uni Food will be offering more learning opportunities for the young people of the Trust in future, with work experience taking place in campus outlets later in the year.
